His theological work sought to implement the vision of the Second Vatican Council in India, encouraging a Church deeply rooted in local cultures and open to dialogue. His writing and teaching engaged evangelization, inculturation, catechesis, liturgy, biblical renewal and the interior life.
In 1974 Pope Paul VI appointed him one of two special secretaries of the Synod of Bishops on Evangelization. He also served EATWOT, the International Commission on English in the Liturgy, the World Catholic Federation for the Biblical Apostolate, the International Association for Mission Studies and the CBCI's Biblical, Catechetical and Liturgical Commissions.
